St. Vincent de Paul Parish was founded in 1903 to serve the Catholic families living near the Washington Navy Yard and Southwest waterfront. From the very beginning, the parish has stood as a place of welcome, prayer, and service in the heart of the nation’s capital.
Designed by W. F. Wagner & Brothers in the Romanesque Revival style, our gray-stone church has stood at the corner of South Capitol Street and M Street SE for more than a century. Its distinctive architecture and central location made it a neighborhood landmark and a visible sign of faith to all who pass by.
Over the decades, the community around St. Vincent de Paul has changed dramatically—from a bustling industrial district to the vibrant Capitol Riverfront neighborhood we know today. Through every transition, the parish has remained committed to its mission: celebrating the sacraments, strengthening families, and reaching out to those in need.
Because of our close proximity to Nationals Park, we are home to the well-known “Nats Mass.” On Sundays when the Washington Nationals play at home, parishioners and visitors alike gather for Mass before heading to the ballpark. It is a joyful reminder that faith and community go hand in hand.
Today, St. Vincent de Paul continues to be a parish of welcome in the Archdiocese of Washington. Rooted in the Gospel, strengthened by the Eucharist, and inspired by our patron saint, we remain dedicated to serving Christ in our neighborhood and beyond.
